CAPACITIVE FINGERPRINT SENSING ROIC

CHALLENGE

Our customer is an extremely ambitious start-up that aims at redefining fingerprint sensing by merging the high quality of capacitive sensing with the benefits of TFT technology (cost, size, integrability, conformability). They decided to prove it on the largest Fingerprint Acquisition Format (FAP) defined by the FBI Appendix-F biometrics acquisition standard, the FAP60, and bypass all the smaller formats. They wanted to build a capacitive fingerprint scanner using Sharp’s TFT technology, so they designed an embedded fingerprint acquisition system, but a fundamental piece was missing: a Read-Out IC (ROIC) to bridge the analog domain of the TFT matrix and the digital domain of data processing.

The dynamic needs of a start-up customer, the high degree of innovation inherent to this project, and the additional design constraint from the intended Chip-on-Foil (CoF) post-processing, called for an adaptable design partner with first-time-right mindset, and SystematIC accepted the challenge.

SOLUTION

SystematIC designed a ROIC with TFT drivers according to our customer’s specifications. We succeeded in designing a modular stack of 400 compact read-out channels with 10-bit digital output and 10-μs conversion time. Moreover, we designed an auxiliary array of high-voltage drivers for the TFT matrix addressing.

The channel pitch matches the tight requirement of the application, which is key to minimize the IC area (competitor’s products of similar number of channels take up to twice as much silicon area). This is possible thanks to the efficient use and careful design of medium-high-accuracy data converters, where part of the resources is shared among the channels.

The fast line conversion time, in combination with pipeline operation and a dedicated parallel output data line bus (LVDS compatible, 5 physical channels), are essential to achieve a full frame scan in less than 60 ms, for the largest fingerprint acquisition format (FAP60).

The ROIC timing is provided by an external host, which allows for fast and flexible evaluation of the first samples and reduces the chances of design mistakes. The host receives the converted data and reassembles the fingerprint image line by line.

CHALLENGE
Our customer is a leading global organization providing components and technology solutions to electronics manufacturing companies around the world. The challenge was to design a current sensor IC that will monitor charge current from a battery in a mobile phone and will remain insensitive to the variations of the supply voltage. SystematIC conducted the entire design trajectory along with evaluation and redesign that was needed to make the final product a notch better than competition.

SOLUTION
The aim was to measure high-side current sensor irrespective of the supply voltage that ranged from 1.8 – 4.5 V. Sense current range was at 1 mA-1000 mA, using an external resistor of 10 mΩ. We developed an advanced floating measurement circuit which is insensitive to the common-mode level. The differential voltage to be measured is very small (micro- to milli volt range). Despite the uncertainties in specification the entire design trajectory was covered in very short time and resulted in a fully functional first silicon.

TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR

4 weeks: architecture proposal

The project was to develop an analog front-end architecture for a given capacitive MEMS pressure sensor. The front -end must accurately measure the pressure in a tire and be robust against leakage, parasitics and noise. The SystematIC methodology was applied. First off, the sensor was electronically modelled to determine an optimal excitation and read out architecture. Next, during the detailed design phase the front-end was designed and layouted for a modern automotive IC application, including safety and test features.

POINT-OF-LOAD POWER CONTROLLER

4 weeks: architecture and IC design proposal

The customer started a business line to produce controllers for industrial electronics. Target applications were Point-of-Load Power Modules, Ethernet Routers and Switches and Industrial Power Management. The customer’s approach was to offer a versatile IC to the market. The customers discovered market interest and received request for samples. Within a year SystematIC developed all accurate analog functions in a new IC process for this complex mixed signal chip and delivered an ASIC reference design and layout.

AC LED DRIVER IC

4 weeks: architecture proposal

The customer produced a range of AC LED lamps, built with discrete electronics, with limited set of external components. The lamps were directly driven from the AC Mains resulting in a compact and potentially low-cost construction. The customer was looking for a custom ASIC solution for further performance enhancement, simplification of the supply chain and cost reduction. A discrete prototype was build and demonstrated to the customer just after two weeks of first contact. The successful demonstration was followed by the development of ASIC and industrialization of the same.

X-RAY DETECTOR READOUT

20 weeks: prototype IC

The customer has a leading international position in industrial X-ray crystallography systems. In one of these products a multi-channel HV passive XRAY sensor is applied for material analysis and an accurately matched channel readout and signal processing ASIC is required. Digital switching should not affect the very low analog signal integrity. SystematIC proposed an architecture of ultra-low noise front ends that are noise optimized to the sensor element and applied in a matched channel configuration.

NO CHALLENGE IS BIG ENOUGH

At SystematIC we are fascinated about IC design. We are persons that want to know how things work and when we actually do we love the challenge of building something with it. And this is not based on just a lucky guess but we work in a structured way to get to a result that is optimal.

You can proof that what you do is very good and ultimate. It's all about capturing what you need within the limitations of physics and mathematics and use the tools that are available to actually make it. Understanding the possibilities and challenges of integrated circuit design as well as the customer requirements is key to a successful project. That is why we are fast. In an early stage we try to capture the key ingredients and solve them on high level.

That way we know it will work before we start and can provide our customers with the best value in both quality of design and in design time.
